The DFIG based Wind Turbine system is the most popular wind energy conversion system due to its various advantages like high operating efficiency, less mechanical stress on the wind turbines and reduced power rating of the bidirectional converters. As the DFIG-WT system has low power rating converters, the ride through capability of the DFIG wind turbines during faults is of great importance. This paper presents an improved control strategy to ride through the fault. This control strategy implemented in Rotor Side Converter (RSC) and Grid Side Converter (GSC) helps in limiting the over currents in the stator and rotor circuits and also it limits the DC link voltages during faults. The Vector control technique is used to implement the strategy in the Rotor and Grid side controllers. The simulations were carried out in MATLAB / SIMULINK and the results were compared to the conventional Crowbar protection scheme. The proposed control strategy improves the fault ride through capability of the DFIG Wind Turbine compared to the conventional Crowbar Protection.
